"Relax, Don't Worry, Change Fields"
Professor
Brendan Frey (PhD ECE 9T7) of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering will discuss how the increasingly
rapid advance of science and technology presents us with wonderful new
work opportunities, but the idea of "switching fields" can also seem
daunting to those who have established a career in a specific field.
Professor Frey's research has spanned several fields and his ideas have
influenced applications and research in genome biology, machine
learning, error-correcting decoding, image processing and computer
vision.
In his lecture, Dr. Frey will describe some of his work
in these areas and discuss his views on how to welcome career changes
and go with the flow of rapid advances in science and technology.
Professor
Goldie NejatDepartment of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
"Robots Amongst Us: The Next Generation of Robotic Helpers"
Professor Goldie Nejat (MechE 0T1, PhD MIE 0T5) of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering will discuss her research on developing robots for widespread societal uses. In particular, she will talk about her work on developing 'Brian' a human-like socially assistive robot that provides reminders, monitoring, and social and cognitive stimulation to those in healthcare settings. She will also discuss her new robot MARP, designed to assist emergency response teams in exploring disaster environments.
Professor
Doug ReeveDepartment of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry
"Engineers Leading Change to Build a Better World"
Professor Doug Reeve (MASc ChemE 6T9, PhD ChemE 7T1), Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry will discuss the urgent need for engineering education to better prepare students for the increasingly complex, global challenges of today and tomorrow, to increase the impact of engineering excellence through leadership capability.
“Engineers leading change to build a better world” is the vision statement for the new Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering (ILead) founded July 1, 2010. ILead is the first of its kind in Canada. Built on the Engineering Leaders of Tomorrow program established at the University of Toronto in 2002, ILead offers curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular leadership education and development opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate students. Our belief: leadership can be learned. Our mission: to build a foundation for lifelong leadership learning.
