Kim Pressnail (CivE) is Chair, First Year, in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
Professor
Pressnail joined the Department of Civil Engineering in 1990 and was
promoted to Associate Professor in 1995. He obtained his BASc, MASc and
PhD in Civil Engineering, in addition to a law degree, from the
University of Toronto.
In 1991 he began teaching a course entitled "Building Science" at the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and in the School of Architecture. Since then, he has taught first-year classes about a variety of topics, which include Computer Fundamentals, Calculus and Mechanics.
His primary research focus is in the area
of building science and sustainability, and he was instrumental in
redesigning the curriculum in Civil Engineering to integrate
sustainability concepts. He developed a new course "Sustainable Building
Design," which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of
buildings. For his efforts in this area, he was awarded the 2009
Excellence in Education Award for the Promotion of Sustainable Practices
by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Professor
Pressnail has an excellent record of service in the Faculty. He served
on numerous standing committees of Faculty Council, as well as Associate
Chair of Engineering Science, where he helped to implement major
revisions to the EngSci curriculum.
