Professor Mark Kortschot is Chair of the Division of Engineering Science (EngSci) and has been a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry (ChemE) since 1988.

Prof. Kortschot’s research focuses on the relationship between microstructure and properties in fibrous materials. He has more than 50 refereed journal publications, and many conference presentations, review papers and other scholarly activities in the areas of carbon fibre composites, natural fibre composites as well as paper. He is the former chair of the Tappi Paper Physics Committee, which serves as the central organization linking paper scientists around the world.

As an established innovator and designer – evidenced by his patents and his newest invention, the Sole Skate – Professor Kortschot brings  experience and expertise to many critical aspects of the EngSci curriculum.

In 2010, the Sole Skate was awarded the Australian Toy Association’s Outdoor Toy of the Year Award, and was chosen by TIME as one of the Top 10 toys of that year.

In 2007, he was part of the team recognized with the Allan Blizzard Award for the development and implementation of the innovative first-year course, Engineering Strategies and Practice (ESP). Since the introduction of ESP, he has continued to teach this course.

Professor Kortschot has a record of exceptional administrative service with the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry and the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. He served as the Associate Director of the Pulp and Paper Centre in 1996; the Associate Chair, Coordinator of Graduate Studies (1997-2003) and the Associate Chair, Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies (2005-2007) in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry; and the Faculty's Acting Chair, First Year (2010).
