Engineering and Globalization (Global) Certificate

What is the Global certificate?

With the establishment of the Dean’s Task Force on Globalization and the subsequent creation of the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN), the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering is committed to exposing its students to these areas. One of the recommendations of the Task Force was to develop expertise in global knowledge through academic programs including degree programs. The Global certificate goes some way to accomplishing this.

To graduate with the Global certificate, students must complete the equivalent of at least four half-courses taken from those listed below. These courses can also be integrated into existing MEng programs to enhance technical content and provide a complementary learning experience.

Who should take Global courses?

This will appeal to engineering graduates who wish to develop the skills of the Global Engineer.  These include the ability to adapt to new situations, the ability to collaborate on a global basis, an understanding of sustainability efforts, and a well-developed sense of social responsibility.

Current Global Courses

Current programming from CGEN includes two 500-level courses: APS510H1F Technologies and Organizations in Global Energy Systems and a graduate-level seminar course APS520H1S Technology, Engineering and Global Development.  Both courses are mandatory for the Global certificate. In addition, the Munk School of Global Affairs is making available one of the courses from their Master of Global Affairs program, GLA1000Y Introduction to the Development of the Global System.

For the Engineering and Globalization certificate, students must complete at least four half-course credits including a minimum of two APS courses from the list below.
