SUMMARY:Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear me (You Just Wanna Dance)
DESCRIPTION:Performance by Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste followed by a discussion with Robyn Maynard. \nIn Y’all Don’t Wanna Hear Me (You Just Wanna Dance)\, Toussaint-Baptiste uses a Long-Range Acoustic Device against its intended purpose of crowd dispersal\, alternatively presenting it as a technology that might unite and even guide a crowd through sound. Over the course of the device’s battery life\, Toussaint-Baptiste uses its built-in microphone to speak about their artistic practice\, recite research into the device’s history\, and speculate on alternative uses of this harmful technology. The performance culminates with a collective dance\, guided by the directional sound of the speaker. \nAccessibility:  This performance will take place across physically accessible locations on campus\, and will conclude indoors in the CCT Atrium\, where seating will be available. The CCT building features accessible washrooms\, and all-gender washrooms on the third floor. \nRegistration required.  \nBlack at UTM is an umbrella initiative that emerged from U of T’s Anti-Black Racism Task Force with a focus on leading transformative changes that promote Black Flourishing and Inclusive Excellence among UTM’s Black communities by dismantling patterns of anti-Black racism and injustice.

SUMMARY:Being (un)seen: Reclaiming\, Resisting\, and Reimagining the Body
DESCRIPTION:If the body could talk\, what would it say? Would it tell stories of adventure? Of strength and courage? Perseverance? Perhaps it would tell a story of resistance? Or a chronology of its existence? \nThe body can be understood as a site of contestation\, where meaning and possibilities are mapped\, imagined\, and expressed. Whether physically\, metaphorically\, or spiritually\, the body is a vessel that carries our thoughts\, feelings\, and dreams\, yet its depth is not fully realized upon first encounter. With this\, the body can not only inform our own thoughts and feelings of ourselves\, but that of others. \nIn this panel discussion\, you will hear from our esteemed panelists who\, together\, share reflections on their journeys of advocacy and resistance\, giving life to an inclusive body politics that challenges normative understandings and perceptions of the body. They will address\, through personal accounts\, how Blackness\, gender\, and fatphobia intersect and produce meanings about how we ought to live and experience our bodies\, and how\, then\, our bodies inform daily interactions. In centering their autonomy\, the panelists give life to a politics of care and love that is grounded in liberation and possibility. \nRegistration required. Space is limited.

SUMMARY:Valerie Jerome Book Event – Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education
DESCRIPTION:Join the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education as they welcome Valerie Jerome in a discussion about her new book\, Races: The Trials & Triumphs of Canada’s Fastest Family. The Jerome family’s impressive list of athletic accomplishments should be a source of national pride. Valerie’s grandfather\, John “Army” Howard\, became Canada’s first Black Olympian in 1912. Her brother\, Harry Jerome\, was an Olympic medalist and world record holder who at one point was known as the world’s fastest man. Despite their stunning athletic accomplishments\, the family’s story best represents the under-discussed intersection of race and athletics in Canada. \nValerie will visit the University of Toronto to discuss Races in a discussion with Bruce Kidd\, Ombudsperson and Professor Emeritus of Sport Policy at U of T. Valerie will touch on her family’s inspiring story\, the racism they faced as Black athletes in Canada\, and what propelled her through life and on the track. \nDate: February 28 2024 \nTime: 6:30pm \nAfter the discussion\, Valerie will be available to sign copies of her book. The U of T Bookstore will be on-site selling copies of Races\, which will be available for purchase throughout the event while quantities last. \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Invisible Wounds: Stories of Survivorship
DESCRIPTION:Homicide-related death has a devastating impact on the mental\, physical\, and spiritual wellbeing of family members\, friends\, and communities who must face the daunting challenge of learning to cope with the murder of a loved one. Experiencing the death of a loved one leaves survivors with invisible “wounds”\, injuries not often visible and comprehensible to the untrained eye. Black survivors of homicide victims must manage to cope with the murder of their loved one while navigating anti-Black and racist systems.   \nFunded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in collaboration with the Story Centre and key community-based organizations\, The Centre for Research & Innovation for Black Survivors of Homicide Victims (The CRIB) led focus groups and engaged Toronto-based African\, Caribbean\, and Black (ACB) survivors of homicide victims in digital storytelling to understand the impact of murder on their wellbeing\, coping strategies and unmet needs.  \nJoin The CRIB at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work to view stories of survivorship and hear directly from storytellers about their experiences and culturally responsive services that are necessary to help them not just survive unthinkable tragedy but perhaps thrive thereafter.  \nThis is a free event. Registration is required
