DESCRIPTION:UTM Equity\, Diversity\, & Inclusion Office (EDIO) in partnership with Hart House Black Futures presents Laugh\, Cry\, Cringe: Storytelling Series for Fall 2023 / Winter 2024. \nLaugh\, Cry Cringe seeks to create braver spaces to engage in conversations that explore personal stories\, current events\, cultural narratives\, while unmasking misconceptions about various groups/communities/people. In this new storytelling format\, our intention is to act as an outlet for folks to release tensions\, build community\, practice wellness\, and become inspired to take positive action in their daily lives. With an amazing line-up of storytellers\, we invite folks to let go and laugh\, cry or cringe while listening to these stories. \nThrough this initiative our hope is to bridge current gaps between our diverse communities through dialogues of understanding and respect\, and to create more inclusive and sustainable learning environments for students at UTM and across all campuses as well as the broader community. \nJoin us for a conversation that is designed to inspire individuals to take positive actions in their daily lives. Our hope through this initiative is to bridge current gaps between our diverse communities through dialogues of understanding\, and to create more inclusive and sustainable learning environments for the UTM community and beyond. \nEach storytelling session will include a different speaker and topic led by students\, staff faculty and/or community members who will share their lived experience\, perspectives\, and life lessons while they invite us into their world. We encourage and invite all U of T students\, staff\, faculty\, and librarians to attend. \n  \nObjectives: \n• Create brave spaces to engage in conversations that explore personal narratives and share stories.\n• Debunk misconceptions about marginalized groups\, communities\, and people.\n• Normalize and shift narratives around anti-oppression in a respectful way. \n  \nFor further information\, please contact Entisar Yusuf

SUMMARY:Black Disability Histories: Reflections\, Narratives\, Futures
DESCRIPTION:Join at The Hub – UTSC\, for a conversation about neurodiversity\, disability and racial justice with youth from the Youth Alliance for Intersectional Justice (YAIJ). \nThis event\, hosted by the EDIO\, is led by youth who are “intimately knowledgeable about life at the intersections” (YAIJ). You will hear and learn from youth with firsthand experiences of disability and racialization. Recognizing that neurodiversity can be understood through an assets-based perspective\, this conversation will re-define and illuminate difference as strength. You will learn more about how to meaningfully cultivate spaces that welcome neurodiverse and racialized youth in a way that reaches beyond accommodation. At UTSC\, prioritizing intentional inclusion means deepening our understanding of multiple perspectives and knowledge through experiential learning within and beyond the academy. \nIf you have any questions or requests to best accommodate your participation\, please contact the event co-ordinator (edio.utsc@utoronto.ca).

In 2018\, she took on the role of Executive Director at Nia Centre for the Arts\, a Toronto-based charitable organization that supports and showcases arts from across the Afro-Diaspora. In her time at the Centre\, she has launched their first residency program\, curated the first Black Art Fair and raised $9-M in capital funding. Alica is now heading up the renovation of Nia Centre’s 14\,000 sq. ft. facility which will transform the Centre into Canada’s first professional space dedicated to Afro-diasporic art. \nThis event is sponsored by the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto’s School of Cities\, and co-hosted by the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation.
