I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Marianne Hatzopoulou as Chair of the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering (CivMin) for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2028.
Professor Hatzopoulou joined CivMin in 2015 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to full Professor in 2020. In 2021, her team received the NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering, and in 2022, as an alumnus (CivE PhD 0T8) she received the U of T Engineering Alumni Network 2T5 Mid-Career Achievement Award. Marianne is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Transport Decarbonization and Air Quality, and has authored more than 150 refereed journal papers in the area of transportation, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. She is also an associate editor of the journal Transportation Research Part D: Transport and the Environment.

I also would like to take this opportunity to extend gratitude on behalf of the Faculty to Professor Brent Sleep, who served as the Chair of CivMin since July 1, 2013. Under Brent’s leadership, the department’s name changed to reflect the synergies between civil and mineral engineering education and research, graduate enrolment and research funding increased, unique partnerships flourished and several ambitious infrastructure projects were completed. Notably, during Brent’s second term as Chair, the site of U of T’s Camp at Gull Lake was renovated extensively, building on a legacy that is more than 100 years old. The impact of Brent’s leadership will be felt by the entire U of T Engineering community for years to come.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Milos Popovic as Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2028.
Professor Popovic joined the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in 2001 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2009. Milos has served as the Director of the KITE Research Institute, the research arm of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute at University Health Network, since 2018. In 2011, he established the Centre for Research in Advanced Neural Implant Applications (CRANIA) at U of T and University Health Network.
Among his many achievements, Milos was awarded the Engineering Medal for Research and Development from the Professional Engineers of Ontario and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers in 2008 and elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 2011. He has authored 243 peer-reviewed journal papers and delivered 285 keynotes and invited presentations. He also holds 21 patents/provisional patents.

During his tenure as Director, BME grew its faculty complement, made significant investments in renovating legacy lab space in both the Rosebrugh and Mining Buildings, and launched several key partnerships, especially in immunobioengineering and pandemic-related initiatives.
I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Professor Markus Bussmann as Chair of the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE) for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2028.
Professor Bussmann joined MIE in 2002, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008 and to full Professor in 2015. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering, and a three-time recipient of the MIE Teaching Excellence Award. Markus’ research interests are in modeling multiphase flow, heat and mass transfer associated with several materials processes. He has authored more than 80 refereed journal papers and 80 conference papers.
