Waste to Value

February 12, 2020 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Join us this month as Prof. Mansoor Barati, discusses how society can address the challenges for developing sustainable materials in the future. Resource scarcity has reached a critical point where the earth’s capacity to support modern human life is rapidly disappearing. Space mining, resource efficiency, alternative materials, and recycling are the proposed solutions, the latter being the most viable and cost-effective approach. Prof. Barati will give some examples of his research on recycling the traditional industrial wastes into valuable products; introducing the old waste as new value while also eliminating the waste and the environmental risks associated with it. These examples are on harvesting the waste energy of metallurgical slags, complete valorization of nickel industry wastes, and producing iron and cement based materials from the aluminum industry residues. Mansoor Barati is Gerald R. Heffernan Chair and Professor in Sustainable Materials Processing at the University of Toronto. His research is centered on reducing the environmental footprint, and lowering the consumption of energy and resources in the metals industry, as well as development of high quality materials for renewable energy systems.  He joined the University of Toronto after one year at WorleyParsons and established Sustainable Materials Processing research lab where over 80 researchers have worked in the past 10 years. His research has been highlighted in about 200 publications and has been recognized by many awards such as CMQ Best paper award, JOM best paper award, and Bicomacombe award.
