Professor Emeritus Christopher Macosko
University of Minnesota (Chemical Engineering and Materials Science)

Applying Rheology to Solve Engineering Problems

Abstract

TBD

Biography
Chris  Macosko is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS) at the University of Minnesota. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University, a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College (London), and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University.

He was among the first researchers to realize the potential of reaction injection molding and reactive polymer blending. He and his students used fast melt processing and chemical reactions or nanoparticles to create new multiphase nano- and micro-structured polymeric materials. They have incorporated graphene in cocontinuous polymer blends to create conductive polymer composites. As Professor Emeritus he continues to collaborate with colleagues on research in rheometry, polymer processing, polymer blends and nanocomposites.

He has been the advisor of over 150 Ph.D. and M.S. students and postdoctoral researchers.  Together they have coauthored over 500 scientific papers and patents. This research has been recognized by several awards including the Stein Award in Materials from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the International Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the Bingham Medal of the Society of Rheology.  In 2001, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

He is the author of the popular textbook Rheology: Principles, Measurements and Applications, (Wiley, 1994). At the University of Minnesota he was the founding Director of the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering (IPRIME). He co-founded Rheometric Scientific, now part of TA Instruments and a leading producer of rheological instruments.

MIE’s Distinguished Seminar Series features top international researchers and leading experts across major areas of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. The speakers present about their latest research and offer their perspectives on the current state of their field. The seminars are part of the program requirements for MIE Master of Applied Science and PhD students. The Distinguished Seminar Series is coordinated for 2022-2023 by Assistant Professor Merve Bodur.
