Research Round: Implantable Neural Probes with Photostimulation, Electrophysiology, and Microfluidics Functionalities (Virtual Event)

Xin Mu is a Ph.D. student at the University of Toronto, conducting her research at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics under Dr. Wesley Sacher. She holds a B.S. (2017) and M.S. (2020) in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University.

Her research focuses on developing implantable, microchip-based tools for neuroscience. She recently demonstrated neural probes integrating nanophotonic waveguides (for targeted photostimulation), microelectrodes (for electrical recording), and microfluidic channels (for chemical delivery).

In collaboration with Dr. Taufik Valiante’s team at the Krembil Brain Institute, these multifunctional probes were tested in vivo to suppress seizures via optogenetic stimulation, showing promise for epilepsy research. Future efforts aim to scale and distribute this technology for broader use in neuroscience.
