LLE – Renewable Chemicals and Fuels: From First Principles to Chemical Manufacturing (Dionisios Vlachos, University of Delaware)

March 18 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Host: Cathy Chin In this talk, an overview of emerging topics in energy will be given followed by an overview of the catalysis center for energy innovation. We will discuss modern technologies that rely on biomass degradation to simple derivatives, such as sugars, followed by a number of reactions, such as Lewis and Brønsted acid catalyst driven isomerization and dehydration to convert sugars to valuable intermediate furans. Diels-Alders and dehydration chemistry will be outlined for the production of…

LLE – Lubricin – Alleviating the Effects of Dry Eye (Gerald Fuller, Stanford University)

March 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Host: Arun Ramchandran Dry eye is an affliction where the tear film of the eye is unable to protect the cornea epithelium. One suspected cause of this condition is a deficiency of mucin, a protein that is thought to enhance wettability and reduce friction experienced during blinking. We report on the development of a model for mucin deficient dry eye and an investigation of the ability of lubricin, a heavily glycosylated protein, to restore lubricity and low friction…

LLE: Trouble Ahead, Trouble Behind: Acid Mine Drainage and Climate Change in the Rocky Mountains (Diane McKnight, University of Boulder – Colorado)

April 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

2019-2020 AEESP Distinguished Lecture Co-hosted with CivMin, Ryerson, and York Host: Elodie Passeport In the Rocky Mountain watersheds, weathering of disseminated pyrite in the country rock and in mining workings generates acidic, metal-enriched water that drains into streams and rivers. This overall process is referred to as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is a long-term and pervasive environmental problem in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierras, which provide water supply for communities and agriculture throughout the south western US.…
