Reconciliation: Walking the Path of Indigenous Allyship

As part of the Faculty’s commitment to improving Indigenous inclusion, all U of T Engineering faculty, staff and students are called upon to start or continue their personal journeys towards understanding and acknowledging Indigenous peoples’ history, truths and culture. Launched in 2021, the Indigenous Cultural Competency Toolkit has been created by and with Indigenous leaders to help guide your journey.

What does it mean to be an ally to Indigenous peoples? Is it possible to call yourself an ally? Or is it more accurate to say that one can only aspire to be an ally as allyship is a continuous process of self-reflexivity and learning and acting in a decolonial manner? These are some of the questions and issues that will be explored by the facilitator, John Croutch, cultural competency training officerin U of T’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

After this 1.5-hour session, register to attend Speaking Our Truths: The Journey Toward Reconciliation, Parts 1 and 2.

  • Part 1 looks at the Canada’s hidden history of Indigenous-settler relations
  • Part 2 examines the effects of the decisions and policies initiated by the British and Canadian state on Indigenous people up to the present day.
