Orientation Week - During the first week of September, multiple events were organized by BESA to introduce the BESA community to the incoming BME students and promote their engagement with the social network. The Orientation Week events included an annual BBQ, which involved more than 200 students and professionals from the BME department, as well as a Quiz Night at Prenup Pub, where BESA covered the food and drink fees.
Toronto Biomedical Engineering Conference (ToBE) - ToBE is a scientific conference that is organized by BESA students every year at Hart House. The keynote speakers of ToBE were (i) Dr. Jessica Winter (William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), (ii) Dr. Ronald Tirolo (Case Western Reserve University), and (iii) Dr. Maud Gorbet (University of Waterloo), and in total, around 300 students and experts registered for this event. Through the presentation of innovative research across BME students and inspirational insights from experts, ToBE aims to foster collaboration and networking in the biomedical sciences field.
Social/Athletic Events - Multiple social and athletic events were organized throughout the year to foster a sense of community among BESA members. In December, a Rock Climbing event was organized with 12 attendees, and BESA covered the registration and training fees. In March, a volleyball tournament was held among a total of 20 students from Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Biomedical Engineering (BME). Finally, BESA organized a curling event at Leaside Curling with 20 attendees, where BESA covered the equipment rental and instructor fees.
Through CPSIF funding, we were able to provide subsidies and discounts for the attendance fees of multiple BESA events. Given that the student body is largely spread out across the city, it can be challenging to generate a strong sense of community within the department. By lowering attendance costs, we enabled students to participate in events that would otherwise be cost- or geographically prohibitive. These events ultimately facilitated valuable networking opportunities between students and professionals in the biomedical engineering field.
