Materials Science and Engineering Discipline Club (MSE Club)
The Materials Science and Engineering Discipline Club (MSE Club) represents the interests of over 300 MSE undergraduate students. Our mission is to organize events and services that foster a thriving community, preserve MSE traditions, and ultimately enhance the MSE undergraduate experience. We organize events such as the annual MSE dinner dance (Buckyball), PEY Panel, Coffee House, and provide students with services such as academic advocacy, health and wellness support, and common room maintenance.
Key Accomplishments for 2025-2026
In collaboration with the Materials Industry Club, we hosted a PEY panel night early in the Fall semester, wherein fourth years and alumni were invited to speak about their experiences with PEY recruitment cycles, internships, and transitioning to the workplace. Our panelists worked in a variety of industries, including steel production, construction, biomedical research, forensic engineering, automotive, and nuclear, thus allowing attendees to learn more about their industries of interest, and how to leverage transferrable skills. Roughly 25 students attended.
At our annual Coffee House open mic night, students were invited to enjoy refreshments, sign up for a performance, or watch their peers’ performances. This year saw a variety of acts, including vocal and musical instrument performances, spoken-word poetry, and a story told by Professor Hattrick-Simpers. Many students expressed their appreciation for the space to socialize and decompress with their peers before their midterm exams and assessments.
This year’s Buckyball dinner dance saw an evening of food, music (Skule Stage Band, then a DJ set by an MSE student), Skule spirit and celebration of the MSE department’s various achievements, with over 100 attendees. Teaching awards were presented to the student-voted professor and TA of the year, and more than 10 awards were presented to students by their peers. Following this year’s theme of “Night Around the World,” attendees were invited to sign a giant postcard and take home their “boarding passes” and “tickets” as keepsakes.
CPSIF Funding Impact
Thanks to CPSIF funding, MSE Club was able to host some unforgettable events for the MSE student body and greater MSE department—and thereby achieve their mission of fostering a strong sense of community. We were able to offer students food and refreshments free of charge at various events, improve amenities in the common room, and fully fund each year’s social, as well as the fourth year Iron Ring celebration, all of which supported student wellness and community. We are incredibly grateful to our funding areas and donors who make these opportunities possible. Your generosity directly supports student well-being, community, and the enrichment of campus life.
