GECoS x CARTE AI Networking Night - On February 27th, this event was organized to connect current engineering graduate students with alumni working in AI. Understanding the difficulties of standing out in the technology sector, we hoped to organize an event where students receive meaningful advice from those working in their area of interest. This event hosted over 80 students and 8 alumni working in various branches of AI, and an introductory address from Dean Christopher Yip. We received excellent engagement and feedback from attendees and plan to make this a yearly event based on student interest. This was also the first event ever held at UofT's Engineering Partnerships Office on 800 Bay Street.
GECoS's Career Night - Hosted on May 14th, the GECoS Career Night was focused on preparing students for the job search. This event featured an inspiring keynote address from Professor Catherine Chandler-Crichlow on standing out in the search for careers, an industry panel featuring professionals in various industries, as well as complementary professional headshots and resume critiques. Attending students were very satisfied with this event based on feedback and left feeling inspired and motivated.
The Annual Engineering Graduate Gala - On May 2nd, we hosted our annual Engineering Graduate Gala financial and volunteer support from all the graduate student associations. Graduate students rarely get the opportunity to celebrate with their colleagues outside of a professional setting within the lab or office. Akin to a dinner dance in undergrad, this formal dinner was hosted to celebrate the successes and hard work of all graduate engineering students at U of T, regardless of their discipline and year. This third edition, organised at Hazelton Manor, featured dancing, a photobooth, a DJ, and a saxophone performance, which were all a hit according to the post-event survey!
The Professional Development portfolio of GECoS has been dormant for the past few years. CPSIF created a path for expansion wherein, for the first time in our history, we collaborated with CARTE to organise the AI Networking Night, engaging over 80 students and several alumni! Following this success, “Unlocking your future” was another panel/resume and LinkedIn workshop focusing on building your online portfolio, engaging nearly 50 graduate students. This funding will also bolster the U of T Engineering Research Conference (happening later this year) with tailored workshops for the first time! We thank the funding body for this enormous support!
