HFIG - We hosted the HFIG Welcome Party during the Fall semester, which is our annual welcome event and this year we attracted more than 50 people one of our largest events of the term. The barbecue was held on September 6th, 2024, and was an open social event for members of the university community to mingle while enjoying pizza and refreshments. This year’s HFIG Welcome Party not only attracted interested students in from engineering but attracted students from various disciplines such as public health, computer science, and mathematics. We also attracted an alumni guest who stuck around and shared some insights with current students. This was a great opportunity to share our organizations mission and socialize with members of the U of T campus as a whole.
Ethic Panel - This event was hosted on September 18th, 2024 in collaboration with the second year MIE242 Cognitive Psychology class which consisted of 120 students. This was our first event that was hosted with an academic course and it focused on discussing various ethics-related topics relevant within academia and industry. These will include but are not limited to research ethics (e.g., consent and confidentiality) and protection of health information (e.g., data sharing, data anonymization, and data scrambling). We had four panelist with backgrounds in both industry and academia present to the students and answer any questions they had related to ethical considerations in human factors research.
Career Panel - This event was hosted on November12th, 2024, and attracted about 20 attendees. The event was intended to offer an opportunity for attendees to learn about different career options in human factors and related fields as well as network with the panelists and others in attendance. Our panel consisted of people from various sectors of human factors including: Dr. Peter Coppin who is a Inclusive Design Professor at OCAD, Dr. Ryan Kealey who is Research Science Senior Manager at TD and lastly, Catherine Li who is a Human Factors Designer at Candu Energy Inc. This event offered our attendees the opportunity to learn from real life HF engineers in academia and industry while also offering a networking/dinner hour after the panel. We would coin this as an event we are most proud of as there was a lot of lively discussion happening during this event and it attracted undergrads, grads, and people from the community.
HFIG greatly appreciates the funding we received this year from CPSIF, as we were able to offer food/refreshments during events and provide guest speakers with gifts as tokens of our appreciation for their willingness to speak at these events and impart their knowledge, experiences, and insights to attendees. CPSIF-funded HFIG events enabled students to interact with the world of human factors in a wide variety of ways, with industry professionals and leading researchers alike. Thank you very much for your support of HFIG and our activities.
