Latinx Industry Panel - This event had 4 speakers in the Winter term, with 4 industry experts (Ines Lucia Fernandez Valdivieso, BASc, MBA; Augusto Madrigiali Fidalgo, BASc; Claudio Adrian Ruiz Torres, BASc, MASc, PhD; Pablo Franco, BASc, B.A.) across 4 disciplines providing brief lectures related to their respective career fields, how they got to where they are, and overall differences between their paths and the intersectionality with being a Latin Engineer, followed by Q&A and networking. This series helped connect students with industry professionals and learn more about how disciplinary knowledge applies to different contexts. 10 students participated.
Salsa Night - A salsa workshop hosted right before Winter reading week that aimed to give students a fun de-stressing event while learning a new (Latin) skill! 25 students attended this event which was led by an instructor who owns her own Salsa studio here in Toronto! Salsa night continues to be our most requested event with some of the highest attendances recorded. holding. Students shared that the event was a very fun activity to help them with exams relax and learn (or perfect) a new skill.
Study to Win - This was a brand-new exciting opportunity for students to win big, enjoy snacks, and share motivational messages. The event was designed to motivate students as they prepare for final exams and presentations by providing a supportive study space. For every half hour studied, students earned one raffle entry towards winning the grand prize! Just sign in, study, leave notes for others, sign out, and win! Simple! The event was a great success with 60 students attending.
CPSIF Funding allowed LESA to continue to diversify the range of events offered to students, allowing each person the opportunity to find their community. We were able to ensure fan-favourites returned for another year in a bigger way (like Salsa Night), and introduced new events that were still student-centered (like Study-to-Win). This year we were able to withstand our commitment to hold one professional development event a semester, and introduced 3 new events with great success. CPSIF allowed LESA to fortify its presence in the Skule community, being visible to more Latinx-identifying students, and those interested in the culture.
