MSE Student-Faculty Mixer - This event attracted approximately 60 attendees who enjoyed casual dining and participated in team-building activities. The timing of this mixer coincided with convocation, allowing us to welcome recent MSE graduates to join the celebration of their academic achievements. Feedback from first-year students was overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that the event significantly helped them establish connections within the broader MSE graduate community.
Christmas Potluck - We marked the conclusion of the fall semester and embraced the holiday season with a festive Christmas Potluck dinner featuring a secret Santa gift exchange. The intimate gathering brought together approximately 18 attendees—a diverse mix of students and professors representing various cultural backgrounds—each contributing unique culinary offerings to the shared meal. The highlight of the evening was the gift-opening ceremony, which filled the room with laughter as recipients discovered their presents and gift-givers revealed their identities. This relaxed celebration perfectly captured the holiday spirit and offered a welcome respite from academic pressures.
Table Tennis Competition - In collaboration with the MSE Club and Chemical Engineering Club (undergraduate student organizations), we coordinated two table tennis competitions: a departmental tournament specifically for MSE members and a larger cross-disciplinary championship open to all Wallberg-based students. These sporting events welcomed participants from all levels of the academic hierarchy, including faculty members. The departmental contest attracted 10 graduate student competitors, while the grand tournament saw even greater participation numbers across both undergraduate and graduate students from MSE and chemical engineering programs. These recreational competitions provided valuable opportunities for community members to develop connections beyond their usual research and academic environments, fostering relationships through friendly athletic competition.
The generous CPSIF financial support enabled us to host a diverse range of community-building activities that proved essential for MSE graduate students seeking to expand their professional networks, enhance their learning experiences, and establish meaningful connections with departmental colleagues and faculty members.
