Crepes and Board Games Social - Our biggest structured event this year was the social held September 27th, with free crepes, a range of board games including French scrabble, and a fun French trivia game with a baguette prize. There were 46 confirmed attendees but this number does not include drop-in participants. The goal was to connect students through a fun event before midterm season and its associated schedule conflicts, and had a competitive element with the trivia game. As our first event of the school year, it was also an introduction to our club for many attendees. This social was a huge success and many of the attendees said they appreciated the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that accommodated both beginner and fluent French speakers. The more advanced French speakers said they liked that SFS offered a place to practise the language, especially since their engineering timetables could not accommodate any French courses. About a quarter of the participants were non-engineering students who were drawn to the event from our marketing. We gained a lot of new instagram followers from participants who wanted to stay up-to-date on our events and read the fun facts that we post.
Valentine’s Craft Night - Since Valentine’s Day fell on a Friday this year, SFS wanted to host a casual event where students could spend their evening hanging out and making crafts. We offered pizza, soda/juice/water, craft supplies, and origami tutorials with French music playing in the background. This was a smaller event with about 13 attendees, but everyone was able to learn a new French phrase and take their crafts home as a memento.
Pizza and Paint Night - Our last event of the year before final exams was a pizza and paint night that we hosted in collaboration with the French Course Union on March 14. The 18 participants who showed up throughout the event were more advanced French speakers so most of the conversations were in French, allowing a more immersive experience for those who came to practise their language skills and expand their vocabulary. Attendees were free to paint what they wanted, and we provided pizza, doughnuts, and drinks since this was an evening event. We have collaborated with the FCU before and wanted to close out the year with a final collaboration between our clubs for students to relax before final exams. Everyone enjoyed creating their paintings and showing them off, and students introduced each other to French musical artists that they liked.
Thanks to CPSIF funding, SFS has been able to provide food, drinks, snacks, and craft supplies at our events, creating a welcoming and engaging space for students. Since our activities are held in the evening to accommodate engineering students’ schedules, offering food encourages participation and ensures attendees (especially commuters) can comfortably stay late on campus without needing to buy meals. This support has significantly boosted event turnout and strengthened our community. We deeply appreciate CPSIF’s contribution, which helps us foster connections, cultural exchange, and language development in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Thank you for your generosity! Merci!
